This is the first TVB series in 2011 that I have watched completely. Called as ’7 Days in Life’, it’s about a fictional telling of a group of different people residing in a hotel during a true event that occurred in May 2009, when the first reported case of a person carrying the H1N1 virus in Hong Kong stayed in a hotel in Wanchai, resulting in the hotel to be sealed off for 7 days.
The main casts in the series includes Sonija Kwok, Steven Ma, Bosco Wong, Yuen Wah, Patrick Tang, Mimi Lo, Koni Lui, and Joyce Cheng. It is a 20-episodes long comedy series centered on the seven days quarantined in a hotel called as Wonderful Harbour View Hotel.
The storyline is very distinctive, and I like it. It is a fresh new idea of a series, a creative one; dealing with the different ways of life by many people quarantined in the hotel and how their stories developed in just 7 days. I have to compliment that the whole series is just all about everything that happened in a hotel in just 7 days. That is incredible. A short period of time for a 20-episodes long drama, but still there are many interesting plots that are going on with each characters. Fantastic!
There are even some unexpected and surprising twist in the plots that further enhanced my interest in how the story will leads to. Eventhough it is somehow complicated and a bit complex, especially at the end when everything is revealed, but it is just good. I also like the background music of ‘What A Wonderful World’ sometimes played that suit the story very well. There are also some lovely touching moments from the series.
The only thing that I dislike is the setting. Even I’m not from Hong Kong, but it is very obvious that there is no such building at the site near to the exhibition centre (at city area facing the harbour). The visual of the hotel is just too fake. TVB seriously needs to put more effort by using better technology on this. So they ended up filming everything within their TVB office building. What a cheap way to save the budget! I just dislike it very much.
For the casts’ performance, it’s fine. I am confident by acting skills of certain casts like Steven Ma and Bosco Wong, but not Sonija Kwok. She had been in many series before, and it seems that there is not much improvement on her performance. I felt a bit weird by her acting. In partner with Steven, both have a good chemistry actually (but Sonija just ruined it somehow; her crying is so fake). I also disliked of a part of the ending when all of the casts danced happily; in fact, all seems to be forced to dance just to finish up the film. No more dancing please, it just doesn’t match!
Anyway, the ending is considered a good one, not the best for it. I think I have to gave a rating for series too, so for this one 7.1 out of 10. (once exceed 7 points, it is considered good and worth watching). By the way, it is currently the TVB series with the highest rating in 2011.
